Tonight Tonight was the third single released from the Smashing Pumpkins' third album, the double-disc Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness.
The single was released with two different version that had different b-sides, with tracks "Meladori Magpie", "Rotten Apples" and "Medellia of the Gray Skies" as b sides on the first release, and "Jupiter's Lament", "Blank", and "Tonite Reprise" on the second. Both versions were combined for The Aeroplane Flies High box set. "Tonite Reprise" is a solo acoustic guitar reprise of the title track with some alternate lyrics; it was originally meant to be included towards the end of Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, and can still be found in the vinyl album version.
The music video for the song has been critically acclaimed and swept the same 1996 MTV Video Music Awards that the band performed it at, winning Best Video, Best Direction, Best Special Effects, Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography, and Breakthrough Video. It is considered one of the greatest music videos of all time.
The song is so popular that it was performed at almost every Smashing Pumpkins concert since its release, one of few songs that can make that claim.
